History
The Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management was conceived in 1996 and formally established in 2002 to unite PR professionals and associations worldwide. It has grown into a global body that champions ethical standards, professional development, and responsible communication.
Key milestones include:
- 1996-2002: Foundation solidified with the Global Alliance Manifesto and formation of committees. Toni Muzi Falconi elected first Chair.
- 2003–2007: Launch of the Global Code of Ethics, regional representation on the board, and World Public Relations Forums (WPRF) in Rome, Trieste, Brasília, and Cape Town, with themes on ethics and diversity.
- 2008–2012: HQ moved to Lugano, Stockholm Accords and Melbourne Mandate developed, and Global Alliance joined global advocacy efforts like the IIRC and UN NGO sector.
- 2013–2016: Continued forums and strategic partnerships; Madrid WPRF emphasized the social role of PR, and PRSK hosted the WCPREE in Kenya.
- 2017–2019: Structural reforms under President Justin Green, opening of an office in Lisbon, creation of six regional councils, and launch of global summits.
- 2020–2021: Accreditation systems and global monthly campaigns introduced; HQ moved to Zürich with new regional offices opened in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and South Asia.
- 2022–now: WPRF 2023 held in Chennai, India; WPRF 2024 held in Bali, Indonesia; launch of the World PR & Communication Awards and Global PR & Communication Model; incorporation of Global Alliance Responsible AI Guiding Principles for the PR and Communication Profession and advocacy for a 18th United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on responsible communication.
The Global Alliance today represents 360,000 practitioners and academics in 126 countries, leading global efforts in setting standards, promoting ethical PR practices, and advancing the profession through education, diversity, and advocacy.
